THE UNSUNG HEROES
Paris 2003 Saint-Denis
Without the skills of the Official Suppliers, the success of these World Championships would be incomplete. Here’s a quick guide to those making the event tick behind the scenes.
The staging of a global sporting event requires the creation of exceptional temporary infrastructures. In the space of a few short days, an organisation on a par with a multinational company has to be put in place. Within the stadium, but especially in the adjoining buildings constructed specifically for the World Championships, namely the Accreditation Centre, Volunteer Centre and Media Centre, an entire logistical system has to be installed and made operational round the clock. The Organising Committee has called upon specialists such as ARES, Générale Location and Aggreko to supply various equipment.
ARES is providing a consultancy service both in advance of and throughout the event for the definition of IT infrastructures, the development of applications, and the maintenance and operation of the systems. The service requires the involvement of no less than one hundred staff over a nine-month period.
Service provider Générale Location is responsible for the fitting out of the venues. Armed with experience garnered at a host of top sporting events (Olympic Games, Football World Cup, Commonwealth Games, Formula 1 Grand Prix), GL is providing its expertise in the form of its temporary structures, furniture, lighting, sound, reception and other products.
Aggreko, meanwhile, fresh from meeting the electricity and refrigeration needs of the last Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City in the United States, is also a valuable partner of the World Championships. This temporary energy solutions specialist proved particularly useful at the start of the competition as France sizzled in a heatwave.
