ATHLETES' VILLAGE |
A CAPTAIN IN THE VILLAGE
Paris 2003 Saint-Denis
We caught up with host country captain Stéphane Diagana and with his big moment just a few hours away, asked him for his initial impressions on the Village.
Sunday, 2/3 of the French team are already settled at the Village and the remainder are set join them monday.” We are proud that our country is staging these 9th World Championships, and it is fair to say that, for some, the thought of competing here in Paris has been an added incentive which has helped spur them on to qualification.”, says Diagana. “We’re bound to get asked for more autographs than usual but it’ll be an advantage to run in front of our home crowd. Setting up a Village is a really good idea. Its design as a Village rather than a hotel, as I’ve experienced at other championships, is one of the big plus points”, says the captain.
“Grouping the different countries together in the same place, especially in a setting such as the Cité Universitaire, should allow the various nations to interact more and get to know each other better. What’s more, we’ve got open space and bicycles at our disposal, and even if some have already come a cropper, they’re really an advantage for getting around the Village”, he adds. Let’s hope that all this helps the French athletes as the others to improve their medal-winning chances at what is the ultimate meeting !
