SPOTLIGHT ON A PARIS 2003 SAINT-DENIS VOLUNTEER (4/10)
Paris 2003 Saint-Denis
These dedicated men and women will be working selflessly behind the scenes to make the 9th IAAF World Championships in Athletics a resounding success. In recognition of their commitment, the Organising Committee will be regularly putting one of them under the spotlight.
A globe-trotter’s life
Bernard Lambert has always had a wandering spirit. From the United States to Japan by way of the four corners of Europe, this father of two has been criss-crossing the planet these past 40 years – sometimes for fun, sometimes for professional reasons. A former engineer, he has retired now after 31 years of loyal service to an international group, which included a four-year stint in the US, but that does not mean he has opted for a sedentary existence. Quite the opposite in fact – now at last he has time to devote to sport, the great love of his life, and athletics in particular. He was quite a sportsman in his younger days too, a French athletics champion back in 1954 and an outstanding footballer.
"Helping fans, being part of the event”
Bernard Lambert knows all about volunteering at major sporting events, having already done the job at the 1998 Football World Cup when he was part of the team of stewards on duty at the Stade de France®. His ambition then, as now, was to “help the fans and be part of the event”.

Since he retired he has had more time on his hands and has therefore been able to play a vital role for the Paris 2003 Saint-Denis Organising Committee. The Parisian has been hard at it since May 2002 recruiting volunteers, a job he takes extremely seriously: “In 45 minutes you have to weigh up the candidate and decide where he or she would be best put to use”. Now the volunteer recruitment process is coming to an end, Bernard Lambert is preparing to take on an equally responsible position as spectator assistance manager at the Stade de France®. Come August it will be the fans’ turn to benefit from this selfless volunteer’s devotion and experience.
