SPOTLIGHT ON A PARIS 2003 SAINT-DENIS VOLUNTEER (9/10)
Paris 2003 Saint-Denis
These dedicated men and women will be working selflessly behind the scenes to make the 9th IAAF World Championships in Athletics a resounding success. In recognition of their commitment, the Organising Committee will be regularly putting one of them under the spotlight.
Due shortly to retire from SNCF, where, in the course of 35 years’ loyal service, he has had the opportunity to “travel” wherever his career has taken him, namely from the Ardennes to Vienna, via Paris and Lyon, Gérard Verschoore is seeing out his working life as regional information system manager. A the heart of this huge company so familiar to us all, he has developed finely honed managerial skills and a sense of responsibility that he has consistently put to good use in the community, in fields as diverse as tennis, computing, music, journalism, and athletics of course.
He has also recently broadened his horizons to encompass developing countries by playing an active role in the work of an NGO. Anyone know where Panadougou is? Gérard and his wife do, as they visited this deprived region of Mali in February 2001 and are preparing for a new mission which will see them make a further trip there in November 2002.
His love of athletics, a sport in which he has worked during major events (French Championships, French Cup, national meetings), was the decisive factor in his coming on board for the 9th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. He will be working closely with technical officials, supervising the installation of the track equipment. What a fine way to follow in the footsteps of Coubertin!
